A Review Of The South African Rand Travelex Cash Passport Card

May 27

There could be quite a few different prices available for travel. How can you ensure you will get the very best rates? Where can you find hidden fees? Will this review for the South Africa Rand Travelex Cash Passport determine if or not the Travelex card presents a reasonable rate?

Don’t place your trust in the myth about commission-free travel

Don’t fall for the hype of commission-free travel money. There are a lot of people who truly believe the zero commission won’t denote an additional fee or exchange rate allowance. This is really the biggest myth about it! Be sure that you always remember to contrast different foreign exchange prices and currency exchange prices before you make your order.

What is a foreign exchange fee and why do you need to be aware of them?

If you make a stop in a foreign nation during your travels to South Africa or have some surplus petty cash after coming back home, it’s likely that you will feel like spending the funds on that travel money card while outside of South Africa. If this is what happens for you, you will need to pay foreign exchange fees on your Travelex Cash Passport. If you return home with 500 pnds of cash left on the Rand card, you may find yourself charged upwards of 28.75 pnds to take any of that money out of a bank or cash machine.

Information on Travelex Rand Exchange Rates.

One of the main things to remember about rand currency exchange rates which are offered through Travelex is that the rates will be different depending on where you charge your Cash Passport. If you purchase your money via an online vendor, it’s likely that you’ll be getting a better deal and definitely a better one that you would have gotten from any airport. Just how good are the better prices, and how poor are the airport rates from Travelex?

We made a choice to study Travelex’s Cash Passport prices at 11:30 a.m. on May 12th, 2010. What we found is as follows.

If you chose to charge your Travelex Cash Passport Rand card through an online service, you would get 10.752 per pound sterling as compared to the interbank exchange rate of 11.2087 as reported by XE.com. So Travelex’s margin for this transaction was 4.07%. Clearly, you are not getting your travel cash commission free.

But if you instead chose to charge your card at Heathrow airport on that same date, you would have received 10.1527 rand per pound sterling which is 9.42% less than the interbank exchange rates that were being reported by XE.com. This is equal to Travelex generating a profit of 188.40 when you convert an amount of 2000 sterling into South African rand. And don’t forget that 5.75% fee you’ll be charged when you try to exchange your remaining cash when you finally make back home!

So the Travelex card is not a good idea but is there anything else out there?

Since Rand Travelex Cash Passport apparently doesn’t provide good value for your money, this isn’t to say that travel money cards are a poor choice altogether. We’ve checked out lots of different money card options and the one stand out in all of them is the FairFX Anywhere Card.

What makes the FairFX Anywhere Card a better option for your needs?

The travel money value of the FairFX Anywhere Card is unmatched by any of the others. The average exchange rate is usually only 0.25% away from the interbank exchange rates and you won’t be asked to pay a foreign exchange fee. There is a one-time 1.5% transaction charge that is employed with ATM withdrawals and buys. There is never any fixed, separate ATM cost.

Can you really save a lot of money by using the FairFX Anywhere Card?

Let’s take another look at that 2000, but this time with the FaixFX Anywhere Card: you’d keep an additional 46.40 over the Rand Travelex online exchange and an unbelievable 153.40 more than the Rand Travelex exchange at Heathrow airport. (This is just an example of how much you may save and is only intended as a demonstration – the true amount saved will depend on current exchange rates at the time of the transaction.)

Qantas Airlines is the national airline of Australia. Qantas is Australia?s largest airline with its main hub at Sydney International Airport. Qantas also has hubs at Melbourne Airport, Brisbane Airport and Perth Airport. Qantas operates international flights into Brisbane, Parth, Singapore, Los Angeles and London.

Qantas Airlines was founded in’20 and is the second oldest continuously operating airline in the world, as well as the oldest operating airline in the English speaking world. It is a member of the Oneworld alliance, one of the largest airline alliance programs in the world.

Qantas Airlines is a private company and one of the most profitable airlines in the world. Qantas Airlines was voted Third Best Airline in the World in the 2008 World Airline Awards. The company and its affiliates maintain hundreds of aircraft and fly Airbus and Boeing planes. Qantas names its aircrafts after Greek gods, stars, famous Australian aviators, Australian birds and Australian cities.

The name Qantas is an acronym for ?Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.?

Adventure travelers seeking to tour Antarctica can fly on Qantas charters booked by Croydon Travel. Qantas flew its first tours of Antarctica in’77. These tours were suspended in’79 after the disastrous crash of Air New Zealand Flight 901 on Mt. Erebus, but were restarted the summer of’94. Qantas ensures that all its Antarctic flight crews have had extensive training in polar operations and know what to do in whiteouts, such as those that contributed to the’79 Air New Zealand disaster.

Qantas rewards loyal customers. Passengers accumulate points based on distance flown, with bonuses for travel in premium classes. Miles are available from both Qantas and Oneworld alliance flights. After criticism for the availability of reward seats, Qantas overhauled its frequent flier program in 2008. Its two new features are Any Seat rewards, allowing members to redeem any seat on the place at a price, and Points Plus Pay, which permits fliers who do not have quite enough mileage points to pay with a combination of points and cash.

The first airline to allow cell phone use during flights, Qantas also provides seat-back access to email and web browsing and wireless internet. It also offers an extensive in-flight entertainment system. Some planes use Mainscreen, where drop-down video menus offer either television programs or recent films, depending on the length of the flight. Other planes use Total Entertainment, which is an on-demand audio/video system.

Qantas recently announced a plan to reduce the airline?s carbon footprint. This works by passengers choosing to fly carbon neutral and then offsetting their own flight emissions by making a small donation to the Qantas program, either in the form of cash or frequent flyer mile points. Qantas donates the money to verifiable carbon offset projects that have met the necessary government requirements to be eligible for Greenhouse Friendly accreditation. Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe and professional golfer Greg Norman are the program?s ambassadors.

How to Get Around In South Africa

Aug 8
6:31

There are a number of ways to get around in South Africa of which hiring a car would give you the most freedom to travel where and when you want.

Taking a long distance train is still a very reasonable and comfortable way to travel as well as being quite safe. However, the second and third class carriages are usually pretty packed and offer uncomfortable accommodations. With inner-city travel, it is highly recommended that tourists avoid the inner-city trains as they have become a playground for thieves and vagrants.

There is the option of privately owned trains such as the Outenikwa Choo-tjoe and the Magalies Express. These trains are extremely safe and offer an enjoyable experience. However, they are not focused on travel to other areas. Instead they are geared mostly towards day trips and only run at certain times and only in certain areas.

Bus services are another great way to travel in South Africa as long as you stick with well known companies such as Inter City and Greyhound. Too many fly by night companies offering cheap prices have lead to tragedy as their mediocore buses resulted in many accidents throughout the country. Baz is another bus line geared more towards tourists and receives a thumbs u from most visitors as it has many stops at hotels across the country and is reliable and safe.

When looking to travel short in town distances, Johannesburg and Cape Town have an excellent bus line that travels to most major areas. However, it is important to note that these buses tend to be very crowded early in the morning and in the late afternoon as they are packed with workers returning home.

A metered taxi is another option for travel. These cars are readily available and generally safe; however they can be quite expensive.

Mini “bus or van taxis are very cheap but they are more than often overloaded. The drivers are fearless and using them is not for the faint hearted.

Using a private transfer line is another option for travel in South Africa. While this mode of transportation is a little expensive, they will pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel, or pick you up and take you safely home after enjoying a fun night out on the town.

The other and easiest option is to hire a car. There are a variety of car rental agencies at all airports and most hotels. Internet bookings are also available for most. Again it is better to go with the reputable agencies like Avis, Hertz and Budget. If you plan to only hire a car to drive around in a specific city where the agency has an office, cheaper options can be considered. For longer distances Avis, Budget and Hertz are better as they have offices all over the country and if you experience any problems along the road they will assist you immediately by exchanging the car. They all have websites with information regarding international license requirements and documentation needed to book a car.

Jeffrey’s Bay History

Jul 29

Regarding the origin of the name of the town, there are a few speculations. One is that Captain Jeffrey’s sailed South Africa’s east coast in the 1840s for trading purposes. When his crew members were struck by scurvy, he landed his ship on the primitive coast, now the main beach of Jeffrey’s Bay. Ten years later, he bought erven 1, 2, 9 and 10 for 79, and built their home on the corner of Woltemade and Jeffrey’s Streets. When the prominent Reilly family arrived in the area in 1928, they reportedly used the original timber from Captain Jeffrey’s ship to build their home, even preserving the 150-year old barometer.

There were other people called Jeffrey’s in that area of South Africa at that time, one been a prominent trader that based himself in the Eastern Cape in the 1850s and the other a whale hunter from St Helena, who used Jeffery’s Bay as a harbour and trading post.

The Reillys bought the land that Country Feeling now occupies and built the old Wimpy Bar during the 1960s. This building was demolished in 1964, and the Reilly’s constructed a double-story building, which they used as a tea garden, with residential flats and a gift shop sharing the same property.

In the 1850s the best know hotel in Jeffrey’s Bay history was constructed, first called the Jeffrey’s Bay Hotel and in 1937 renamed The Savoy, it was demolition in 1968 along with a part of Jeffrey’s Bay history.

The legendary John Whitmore, also know as the father of South African surfing, was travelling the Garden Route of South Africa during the 1950s on a business trip and came across what is considered to be one of the best surfing waves in the world, the rest is history. Today thousands of surfers from across the globe make the pilgrimage to Jeffrey’s Bay to pit them against the best right hand point break in the world and to pay homage to this awe inspiring wave. Jeffrey’s Bay also hosts the international Billabong Pro competition which is the half way point to determine the next world surfing champion.
